Buoyant Recovery for Construction Sector
Feb 25, 2021
The COVID-19 Pandemic had a significant impact on employment across all sectors, rendering many unemployed and leaving others in receipt of furlough payments indefinitely. Despite construction being one of the only sectors to continue operating in a (relatively) normal fashion throughout 2020, it wasn’t immune to challenges. With projects on hold, workforces were reduced and many found themselves out of work entirely as the pandemic took hold.
However, figures from the last quarter of 2020 combined with emerging data from the start of this year show excellent recovery, with a 25% increase in vacancies at the end of last year it is clear that opportunities within the sector are on the up which comes as welcome news for all. In many cases, recovery that comes at a faster than anticipated rate – meaning recruitment of skilled tradespeople has become a number one priority for firms as they focus on rebuilding their teams ready to meet project demand.
November 2020 saw construction output grow by 1.9%, driven predominantly by a 3.5% new project increase. All sectors (with the exception of public housing, and other public work) saw an increase in work during this period, indicating great scope for growth and opportunity for the year ahead!
