Construction Material Shortages
Jun 21, 2021
As any business operating within the construction sector knows, supply and demand issues have posed significant challenges in recent months.
Recent PMI data suggested that the sector is heading for a strong recovery with output highest it’s been in almost 7 years, and order volumes accelerating at an incredible rate; matching figures from 24 years ago when the survey began. Great news as we emerge from what has been one of the most challenging years for so many industries – providing we can source what we need to build.
A recent statement published by the CLC Product Availability workgroup has identified the challenges faced and practices to adopt to minimise the impact and help us keep construction projects moving forward.
For those who have the resource to do so or firms planning for larger scale projects buying ahead (and in bulk) has been the preferred option. This has meant that some SME’s who are used to same day purchasing via local builders merchants have struggled to get hold of what they need. This has presented cash flow issues, and project timeline disruptions. The CLC statement sets out the importance of collaborative working – with product allocation systems a possibility for helping to manage the expectations and requirements of the smaller businesses.
With the global supply chain challenges and price rises we’re seeing across the sector, the CLC highlight the integral role honest communication plays when managing expectation. For example, manufacturers should be sure to relay realistic delivery timeframes. This will help customers plan effectively for their upcoming projects and avoid disappointment.
struktas’ commitment:
“Here at strukta we are seeking to be proactive with our communication regarding these issues to ensure we give sufficient notice to our customers and help them plan for these delays. Our commitment to never run out of our top selling lines, is proving a challenge, but the team in supply chain are working tirelessly to pursue every avenue to source the products our customers need. Investing in additional storage space has helped us increases our stock significantly, meaning we have the stock, ready to dispatch when it is needed”
– Myles Moggach, Managing Director.
