How Do strukta Engage and Reward Our Awesome Team?
Dec 06, 2018
Over the last 40 years, strukta has become a well-trusted specialist builders merchants in the south of England. We’ve also become a loved site supplies and safety equipment provider, helping projects all across the south to do things safely and efficiently.
Whilst there’s no way to exactly measure it, we’re confident that we’ve a great company culture, and a team that really looks out for one another. What we do know is that any great company is a product of its workforce!
Impressive offices
We’ve opened some amazing modern offices in Andover, Hampshire, so that we have a cool and comfortable atmosphere for our great team. Not only has it been designed to accommodate us well, so that we all have plenty of space to work and to roam, but it even has some amazing features that no other builders merchant can offer. We have a slide. Yes, a slide! If that wasn’t cool enough, we also have a table football table, which can create some epic rivalries.
Billy Joel eat your heart out, we have piano men and piano women, which is great, because our offices have a communal piano. Quite often, all it takes is for one person to sit down and start twinkling their fingers along the keys before we all start singing along and having a great time.
Don’t be misled, while there are some fun features, this is an environment that induces productive and purposeful hard work, and that’s because we have balance, comradery, and a creative communal space.
Team meals and activities
Our Directors are generous, especially when it comes to team breakfasts and lunches. At the start of November a street food van rolled up and dished out a delicious hog roast to our hard-working team.
It’s not always hot meals though, sometimes it hot cakes. We often put together bake sales to raise money for charity and we even held a cake competition recently.
We hosted a bikeathon on a stationary exercise bike, challenging the strukta team to cycle 392 miles (a trip between our 7 Trade Stores) over a 27-day period, in order to raise money for a cause that is close to many people’s hearts. Thanks to an incredible effort from our team (and customers) we managed to clock up 928 miles.
struktaREWARDS
The struktaREWARDS program is an employee benefits portal that has been a massive success. Whilst cash bonuses may be more traditional, we love the opportunity to earn rewards in the form of discounts, vouchers, cashback offers and more. We get great advantages in high street retailers, holiday companies, and restaurants, as well as others, just for being a member!
Challenges
Team challenges with great prizes are another way that the strukta team is incentivised. One of the most fun and interesting challenges we had last year was a storytelling challenge, where the winners enjoyed a competitive afternoon of Footgolf. The final competitors were Marketing vs Projects.
Some other challenges we play include ‘pin the tail on the donkey’ and a presentation game where we try to pitch and sell things to each other. It all contributes to a brilliant atmosphere, work ethic, and company culture.
Employee of the Year
A huge congrats to Stuart Radford, our Warehouse Manager, who was the winner of the 2017/18 strukta Employee of the Year award. Stuart is the latest on the list of amazing high-performing team members who regularly go above and beyond, not just in their role, but in how they treat people, how punctual and professional they are, and how much of a positive impact they have on colleagues. The best thing about the award is that it’s voted for by everyone, meaning anybody has a chance to win, it simply comes down to making a positive difference.
Our team has the opportunity to place votes for their top 3 employees, making it a bit kinder than having to decide on just one. Stuart won because our team felt he was the most responsible person and juggling the most plates. The prize this year was a bottle of good champagne and a personalised glass award.
Conclusion
The examples you have read above are just the start of what we do to engage our team and make everyone feel part of the big strukta family. We are inclusive, warm, welcoming, and we want to support each other’s careers and goals whilst we work. Building a company culture takes time and energy, but it’s absolutely worth it when you see your colleagues arrive with a smile and often leave with one too.
