Building Product Shortages: Support For The Smaller Housebuilder.
Jul 06, 2021
It’s no secret that building product shortages are a hot topic in construction. Up to date data suggests that Steel and Timber are still presenting significant challenges. Reports suggest that a whole host of other products from PIR Insulation, to Screws to Aggregate are also proving problematic. The impact is significant for businesses across the sector. However, some tradespeople are being hit harder than others. With many larger housebuilders willing (and able) to commit to larger orders, some smaller firms are struggling to get what they need.
To ensure smaller housebuilders don’t miss out on project opportunities in the coming months, the government have pledged their support. In their recent Construction Product Availability Statement, The CLC product availability workgroup voiced the importance of the fair and transparent management of product distribution. The aim – to ensure smaller businesses can get the construction materials they need. The housing minister, Christopher Pincher, has confirmed that an examination of the challenges faced by these builders will help guide a support plan and an intervention, should product shortages become an “ongoing and material obstacle”.
In a time of uncertainty, and with no immediate sign of a return to normality when it comes to the availability of raw materials and products; it is positive news for smaller housebuilders across the UK.
